You make some interesting points! I wonder (for completeness of the fanlore article purposes, not necessarily for pod-aware) if there'd be value in specifically reaching out to areas of podfic that pre-date or exist in parallel with the amplificathon/archive/twitter fandom. I'm curious, for example, whether the podslash owner/moderators are still the original folks and if they're still active or have their own versions of its history.

(I also have a memory around the same time as I first discovered podslash of a Smallville fic archive that had a lot of recorded stories. I've always been curious if that archive's content got absorbed into the archive at some point or if it was its own standalone thing. Wish I could find it again.)

That would be SUPER interesting.

And I'm pretty sure that oulangi was the mod all the way back in 2007 when I started posting podfic to podslash and their name is still attached to the com.

Word. I can absolutely guarantee that some of my own thoughts and recollections are distorted by having retold and reheard certain stories over and over, or by my emotional reactions to certain events, or to wanting to find connections and nice straight lines from A to B that aren't really there. So it's always going to be sort of collective mythology and not fully accurate reporting.

On the other hand, if it's the collective mythology that's getting told in these podcasts and in meta posts throughout the years and conversations and so on, the collective mythology is almost more powerful and important in shaping current events and attitudes than the actual events were?

And of course, we're so lucky that this is at least on the internet so we can go back and reread some of the old comment threads and fact-check ourselves. The fact under the layers of mythology would be even harder to pull out if we were anywhere other than the internet!

(FWIW, if you ever want me to try to track down the source for something I've said about the history of podfic, lmk and I will give it my best attempt.)

This was such a cool, uniqe (that I've seen) way of talking about our history.
